Mobile Roaming Tariffs To Be Scrapped In India by 2013

image Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said on Monday that mobile phone roaming would be free from next year. The government had proposed removal of roaming charges in the National Telecom Policy 2012, which was approved by the Cabinet in May.

As of now, subscribers have to pay roaming fees for using their mobile phones outside their telecom circle. Analysts say telecom companies may raise call tariffs to offset the loss due to free roaming.

Last Friday, Reliance Communications raised call tariffs by 25%, while Idea Cellular reportedly hiked rates by up to 20 percent in Madhya Pradesh earlier and plans to extend it to other states where it operates.
