Sydney Malayalee Association

It is with profound sorrow that we inform you of the unexpected and sudden death of

Gerald Joseph (51 Years old), a member of our community, on Tuesday 23 September. He

had come to Australia three years ago on a Visiting Visa, at the expiry of which, he applied

for a Bridging Visa. Gerald had been doing cash in hand job in a restaurant kitchen near

Regents Park.

Though he was suffering from cold and fever for a couple of weeks, he did not consult any

doctor as he could not afford it and was not entitled to Medicare facilities. He used to live in

a single room attached to a North Indian family and was not having proper food either. By

the time he was taken to the Liverpool hospital by a friend, he was infected with Pneumonia

and his lungs, liver and kidneys were affected. Despite all possible efforts, the doctors could

not save him. His wife, Kunjamma and three young children are in Kerala. She also has to

care for her elderly parents and Gerald’s parents who live with her.

Sydney Malayalee Association, assisted by KP Jose, Ex President, has managed to send his

body to India, thanks to the financial assistance and support from the Indian Consulate.

We sincerely appeal to the Malayalee community in Sydney to please donate generously to

support Gerald’s distressed family, who is in severe financial hardship. We understand that

Gerald was the only earning member of this unfortunate family. Gerald’s deserving family is

in great need of our assistance, especially for the continuation of the children’s education.
